In the final semester of school in Howest, I made a thesis in cooperation with the city of Bruges. 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the monument preservation division. They wanted to know what the city would look like if their building regulations weren’t that strict or even if some never existed in the first place. For this subject the current regulations were studied and compared to those of Ghent. A short evolution of the streets in the last 50 years and the architecture styles in Belgium are also discussed. The results of all the research was used to build a 3D model of a part of Bruges and visualize some images of an alternative Bruges.

For this analysis I worked with Jason Brissinck (brissinckjason.be). We had to choose a public building with a cultural or religious purpose, analyze it on multiple fronts and make a 3D abstract cube representing the building and our findings.
We chose the Concertbuilding in Bruges, designed by Robbrecht & Daem. The building houses two auditoriums. The bigger one in the main building and a smaller one in the tower featuring the stage in the center and seating on balconies going up in a spiral. The tower ais also a beacon to the city, lighting up at night. The building is made from concrete and is covered in terracotta slates to blend in to the environment. The entire building has also been placed on shock absorbers to counteract the motion coming from the cars in the underground parking and tunnel.
For the 3D model, we decided to focus on the floor plan and use of materials. We started with squares, taking out parts just like on the floor plan and made a cube with these shapes. On the outside we put small strips, representing the one on the facade of the Concertbuilding. Several windows were added and covered in transparent colors, the same you can see on the windows and glass railings of the building. The materials were switched from inside to outside and the other way around. Inside we have a terracotta color, representing the slates on the outside. The outside of the cube was painted with a gritty grey paint to act as the concrete and the strips were made in wood, the second material that is frequent in the interior of the building.

For our final project we worked together in groups to design a building in Seabruges to house an art gallery and bring the city together, along with an accompanying square and pontoon. This project was made by Larissa Teck, Jolan Delboo, Ruben Vandenberghe, Helene Baneux, foreign exchange student Ivana Nyvltova and myself and was set up as a architecture contest. The name we chose exists of two parts. CBB stands for C-Bruges Building, with the C for container. 8380 is the zip code of Seabruges.
Located at the marina of Seabruges, the site of 6600 m² is the recplacement of parking spots and an empty square and is the starting point of a new waterside development project. The old building along the water will soon be torn down and replaced. About 1450 m² of this site was to be used for the new building/art gallery, situated on the side of the Kustlaan.
After several brainstorming session, we came up with the idea to make a glass shell housing all the required functions. Inside on the left is an open space five stories high. This is used to stack several shipping containers to form different set-ups for all kinds of functions and events, such as an art gallery, but also a christmas market, a TED talk, etc. Those containers are a link to the city and it’s port and can be found all over the building, square and pontoon. On the other side of the building are cascading platform, holding the other functions. There you can find a restaurant, workshop area and offices and suspended above the open space are the temporary residences for artists. The vertical circulation is on the far right and leads to the platforms and the rooftop. On the roof is a public park, designed to give back the space taken up by the building.
On the square you also have the shipping containers, this time not only as function, but also in the ground, creating different levels. The same containers are also on the pontoon, with funtions such as an access point for water sports.
For the contest part of the assignment, we had to create renders, visualize the floor plans, sections and facades and design panels for our presentation. Together we chose which way to go with the visualisations and created our own style : use of dark orange as a link to rust found on containers and metal structures in a port and a comic style for our drawings. Below you will find several images I made as well as the panels and a video for the presentation. The concept of the project was done as a group, for the visualisation we each did a part. The images below are made by myself or by Larissa and me. The video is also a creation of mine with some scenes made by the other students. The panels were made by Larissa and myself. The images on the panels contain images made by all the students. Jolan, Ruben and Ivana made the models in two different scales to present at the presentation.
The project assigned to us in semester 2, was a house on the waterside. This time we had to design a 3 story building on site Dupont in Bruges for one family. In comparison to our previous assignment, there were a lot more regulations we had to comply to. It was the first time we had to use a green roof system, we had to add room for technical systems and make use of a vide.
One of our first assignments for Applied Architecture was to design a small building to house an AirBnB. We were allowed to choose our own location, disregarding logic and cost. An opportunity to be creative. I decided to put this structure on top of one of the roofs of the Belfry in Bruges.
On friday March 1st we visited Batibouw. When we first arrived, we attended a lecture by Steven Beckers, an architect specializing in circular economy.
He explained to us that our society is destroying the planet by creating too much waste. In his vision, everyone should think ahead and make sure that everything we use, can be reused, upcycled or repaired. This is called ecodesign. We should create a positive impact instead of just reducing the negative impact.
